To Ledge or Niche: Which shower option is right for you?

When it comes to building a shower space, storage can become a critical element. Shampoos, soaps and other accessories require their own space for storage and a niche or ledge can be the ideal solution. Let’s explore the differences between a shower ledge and a shower niche and break down the facts to help you to make the best choice for your bathroom.

Niche compartments are a compact solution

A niche is a recessed compartment which is purpose built directly into the wall of the shower, allowing for easy access and practical daily use.

A niche may be a horizontal or vertical space and serves its purpose as a purposeful storage space for all of your toiletries and shower accessories, as opposed to the traditional shower caddy.

Niches suit small bathrooms and showers in instances where you are maximising your space saving potential, because it nests directly into the wall, allowing for maximum showering space.

Ledges for larger spaces

Unlike a niche, a ledge is a flat shelf, often protruding from the wall in the shower with the option to recess if space permits. As ledges take up more space, they are an ideal accompaniment to a spacious shower or bathroom and become a design feature unto themself. Ledges can be decorated with plants and candles, making them a flexible design option, however, unlike a shower niche, a ledge is decorative and not designed for permanent storage of toiletries.

Making the right design choice for your bathroom

Both shower ledges and shower niches make excellent storage solutions for your bathroom and either choice will add a decorative and aesthetically pleasing element to your bathroom.

Your shower space will be the greatest determination between a niche and ledge, followed by constraints such as costing and practicality.  With plenty of space, a ledge can easily be installed, providing space for decor, whilst a niche is best suited to smaller spaces and saving room as well as storage. Ultimately, your design choice should come down to practicality versus styling in your bathroom and bring you joy every time you utilise this busy space.
